Located in Virginia and North Carolina, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is the largest intact remnant of a vast habitat that once covered more than one million acres in the area.

The refuge acts as home for a variety of birds, almost 100 species of butterflies, black bear, river otter, and flying squirrels, just to name a few. For its human visitors, the refuge offers hiking, biking, and boating.
