Once named Lafayette Park, the Virginia Zoological Park first became a zoo in 1900 when it first started collecting animals. Over the years it has grown, been renamed several times, and eventually came to be known by the title it holds today.

Accredited from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Virginia Zoo is now home to animal from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, and North America.
